HISTORY OF GAMMA PHI BETA

During a time when women were discouraged from attending college, four courageous friends came together in the face of adversity with a vision in mind. Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Haven, E. Adeline Curtis, and Mary A. Bingham (pictured above) were inspired to organize a women's society dedicated to promoting lifelong commitment, intellectual and personal growth, and service to humanity. As a result, the Gamma Phi Beta sorority was born on November 11, 1874, at Syracuse University, New York.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter at the University of Toronto was colonized in 1919 and became the first international chapter of Gamma Phi Beta.

Since the chapter was founded in 1919, generations of women have found a home in Gamma Phi Beta while pursuing  degrees in a variety of subjects. While each woman is unique, the values shared between women during their time in the collegiate chapter have been a uniting force.

As a group, we participate in sisterhood activities to strengthen our friendships and provide a loving environment; we are actively invovled in our community, working to uphold the Gamma Phi Beta standard of service; and finally we support one another in our academic pursuits, prioritizing scholarship before any other sorority activity to ensure each sister may live up to her fullest potential.
